A costly overcharge by a taxi driver

Two Japanese passengers, on their first trip to Shanghai, flagged down the taxi at Pudong International Airport. When they got out at their destination, they were given an invalid invoice and charged 1,300 yuan (US$189) for a trip that should only charge 110 yuan.

A serious cheating by taxi driver with more than 10 fold overcharge.

The case was reported to the taxi watchdog and airport police.

Then solution:

1. The passengers, as per the taxi service regulations of Shanghai, received 3,600 yuan in compensation from the driver. City taxi rules say victims should get three times the fare charged as compensation in cases of overcharging.

2. The taxi driver was tracked down by police the same day and received a 10-day detention.

3. The traffic authority revoked taxi driver’s business license and ordered that the penalty be paid to the victims.

4. The Sanleng Taxi Company, the driver’s employer, has also been downgraded in the watchdog’s official credit-rating system and will be monitored closely in future.

So watch out any taxi scam, get your invoice as much as possible, and make complaints to local authorities if you are unsatisfactory.  Shanghai city taxi authorities will help you out.
