You might noticed that some young people are queueing in front of a box to print something in Metro stations since last year. I was wondering what was that box for. It looks like a kind of vendor machine.
Some of my colleagues told me that was the machine called Velo City, which can print out discount coupon to be used in some restaurants and shops.
Today, when I passed Raffles Square near People’s Square, Velo cards were distributed free. I then decided to apply one for myself.
I filled in my name and mobile phone number. Then I got the red, rectangular shaped Velo Card. The size is 1/4 of a credit card.
The instruction said that before I can use the card, I have to text the serial number on the package to a certain number to activate my card.
Soon, I received a message notifying me that my Velo card was activated.
Then I went to a machine in the Metro station to test my card!
First, use the card to touch the pad on the machine. I guess the machine reads the information of the card. Then I selected the restaurant/shop on the machine. The discount information of each store was displayed on the small LCD screen. There were two buttons, Forward and Backward, allows me to view all the information. If I decided to print one piece of discount information, I pressed the Print button. A receipt like slip was printed.
To check if this slip works, I printed out a Subway Buy one Get one free Tuna Sandwich coupon and presented this at one of the Subway shops. Everything seems so smooth, I got one sandwich free!
That’s why some many people are queueing!
I checked its website and found I am actually lucky today because the Velo card is not free. The price of card on its web ranges 10 - 25RMB.
There are three ways to purchase the card:
1. from Velo web site
2. from Family Mart, Lawson convenience stores in Shanghai
3. Velo Station (there is one in Raffles Squre near Starbucks)
Unfortunately all the services are currently in Chinese only.
