Question from Tony:
I need to change from Metro Line 4 to Line 1 at Shanghai Railway Station. I checked the map and found these two lines are quite separated. Is there any clear instruction to show how to interchange?
Answer from Hoo:
Some Metro stations in Shanghai can be very confusing like a maze. You are right. Line 4 is on the North side of Shanghai Railway Station and Line 1 is on the South side.
So if you change from Metro Line 4 to Line 1, you will have to exit from Line 4 by inserting your single ticket and buy a new ticket at Line 1 to enter again.
When you go out of the Line 4, follow the sign of Line 1, you will walk through an underground street with small booths alongside, which actually is the path to connect the north square and the south square of the Shanghai Railway Station. Then you arrive at the Line 1 entrance. The total walk time is about 10 -15 minutes.
If you have the public transportation card and exit and re-enter within 30 minutes, it won’t double deduct the costs from your card. If you use single ticket, you will have to buy a new one at Line 1 ticket office. This will cost you more than using transportation card as it double count the costs.
