Train from Shanghai to Hongkong Kowloon

Question from Rebbecca:

Hi, I plan to go to Hongkong in the August. I heard there is a train from Shanghai to Hongkong. Is it true? I would love to take the train? Do you have more information on this, such as timetable, price etc? Thanks.

Answer from Hoo:

Yes, you are right. There is a train from Shanghai to Kowloon Shanghai. But it doesn’t run daily. In some months, it runs on the even number of the date and some on odd number of the date. For 2010 arrangement, see below:

June: even
July: even
August: odd
Sep: even
Oct: even
Nov: odd
Dec: odd

So if you are going in August, you can only take the train on the odd number of the date, e.g. 11th August is OK and 12th August is no.

The train service number is T99. Departure time from Shanghai is 17:09 and will arrive in Kowloon Hongkong at 12:56pm on the next day. So the total journey takes about 20 hours.

Prices are below: (Unit in RMB)

Hard seat: 225
Hard sleeper (upper): 383
Hard sleeper (mid): 397
Hard sleeper (low): 410
Soft sleeper (upper): 602
Soft sleeper (low): 629

You can buy the tickets from Shanghai Railway Station or from the ticket offices in the city. You can buy in advance up to 60 days before departure.
