It seems that the global economic downturn didn’t affect China too much, at least from the surface, the stock market is booming, the house price is going rocket high, stores are packed with people, long queues in front of the restaurants etc. But I did find much more sales promotions this year in every shopping malls, department stores in Shanghai. The stores try to use every opportunity to sell stuffs, such as public holidays like Labour’s Day on 1st May, Dragon Boat Festival on 28th May, Children’s Day on 1st June etc, so for the customers, everyday is a big sale day!
In this week’s newspaper in Shanghai, big sale advertisements again everywhere, so what is the special occasion is coming? Men’s Day! and on which date? 3rd August!
This is my first time to hear there is Men’s Day in China. But once I knew the date, No doubt!
You may know that we do have International Women’s Day on 8th March in China, some organisations or companies even give half day off for their female staff. So here is the rationale behind this:
Women’s Day: 8th March -> 3.8 reverse it 8.3 -> 3rd Augsut -> Men’s Day
Creative? Amazed? Yes, I am!
Another interesting day invented by Chinese is Single’s Day or One’s Day on 11th November. Why? 11.11, nothing else but one!
Those unusual days were invented partly because of fun partly because of sales opportunity. It seems that the Single’s Day is well accepted by lots of young people in Shanghai from past years’ experiences. Let’s see how the first Men’s Day is going this weekend.
