If you want to find a cheap hotel in Shanghai, I think you really should know what your budget is. Hotel prices usually vary from 10RMB to more than thousands of RMB per night which is charged by way expensive grand hotels. First let us say hotels with price from 10 to 20RMB, personally I don’t recommend any tourists to live there. Though I didn’t have a chance to stay, I overheard these hotels are dirt cheap so you should not expect much about service or safety. Try to avoid as possible as you could.
Hotels with price from 20 to 30RMB per day are some hostels, discount hotels, or hotels dedicated to fresh graduates looking for jobs in Shanghai. Actually some of them are not bad as service or even pretty good. Usually guests will share the public kitchen, bathroom and entertainment room etc.. Price is only applied for one bed within one hotel room. I guess most people are OK for these hotels unless you hate to share room with strangers. Hotels price starting from 50RMB till 100RMB, I believe they are still hostels or discount hotels. And the difference is they have a better location than lower-tier ones. For example, they are near downtown, Metro stations, and sightseeing places of Shanghai.
Hotels price above 100RMB and below 300RMB are family hotels or budget hotels. These hotels are good choices for those who like to stay with private room. My friends having a personal trip to Shanghai always consider these hotels. By the way, most of these hotels have Internet connection in the room which is free to guests. I think this is one more selling point where guest like to stay.
