Last night, when I was passing Yuanshen Stadium in Pudong, I saw lots of people (most were in their pajamas) were in the middle of Weifang Road to block the street. It seemed that they were protesting against something.

I was told the whole neighbourhood was blacked out in this hot and sticky summer night from 7:15pm. One hour after they reported to Shanghai electricity company, still nobody showed up to help. People were really annoyed and then decided to protest in the street. I saw about 10 police were around to divert the cars and closely monitor the crowd. Meanwhile the police were trying to talk to the angry people. Be honest, they were quite friendly.

After 2 hours’ waiting, the staff from the electricity company finally arrived and the flats were lighted up again.

The staff explained that the possible reason for blackout was electrical overload. The neighbourhood was pretty old one and the capacity of the old electrical network cannot meet the growing needs for electricity especially in the hot summer with lots of air conditioners.
