I thought there was no Tourist Information Centre such things in Shanghai until I saw one near Nextage Department Store in Pudong last Sunday.
The small office is located in the middle of the pedestrian walk in front of the Best Buy and Costa Coffee near Nextage Department Store in Pudong.
I saw some tourist information leaflets, brochures and some souvnirs displayed inside. There were a couple of staff as well. So I decided to give it a try by pretending being a tourist. Disappointingly, I didn’t get much information from the staff and they basically just helped book the hotels or travel packages.
I was also wondering why the government set up a centre near Nextage which is not a tourist spot in Shanghai. It makes much more sense if the centre is near Yu Garden or the Bund or even Longyang Road Metro Station and Maglev Station makes more sense.
Then I searched the web and found there are actually a bunch of them throughout the city in every district. (List available from the government website http://lyw.sh.gov.cn/en/info/list.html. But it is not so updated as it doesn’t include the one I saw near Nextage Department Store). As the tourist information centre, it is not so accessible and visible in this huge city.
Interestingly, the information center near the Nextage seems to dedicate itself for International Visitors (as indicated on its window). I just didn’t pretend to be a foreigner to see how good their service was because I felt weird if I spoke English to the Chinese staff.
