There are plenty of tailor shops throughout Shanghai in every corner of the city. Those small shops can provide alters and repairs service and also custom tailoring services, some even have fabric available. Those small shops are usually in those old residential block near the wet market. Local people especially the old usually go there to have their clothes done. Those shops are convenient if you want some alteration or repair. It is cheap as well, for example, it is about 5RMB to short a pant.
And of course, there are some fabric market where you can find loads of fabric and tailor stalls from which you can order custom made clothes.
- South Bund Fabric Market
Address: 399 Lu Jia Bang Road, Huang Pu District
Transportation: The market is near Nanpu Bridge on the west side of the river. Get off at Nanpu Bridge station, Metro Line 4 and then take a taxi there. Taxi costs 11RMB.
- Shi Liu Pu Fabric Market
Address: 168 Dong Men Road, Huang Pu District
Transportation: The market is actually close to Yu Garden. No metro station nearby. The most convenient public transportation would be ferry if you come from Pudong. Take the ferry (non-air conditioned, only 0.5RMB per person) from Dong Chang Road Ferry Dock. The fabric market is just 5 minutes walk after you arrive.
These two markets are very similar, located in a 4-5 floor building, loads of stalls piled with fabric rolls. Most stalls there can provide fabric and also the tailoring service.
First you choose the materials yourself from those piles of fabrics and then tell them what kind of clothes you want (you can show the picture from the fashion magazine to them). The rest? Bargain!
The price you bargain for is usually including everything, fabric, tailoring fee etc. And of course, you can ask the price for fabric and tailor fee separately.
Usually a men’s Khaki Pant costs about 100RMB, Men’s suit about 400RMB, Men’s long sleeve shirt about 120RMB.
The quality is adequate for day to day wear. It would be helpful if you can tell the quality of the fabrics by yourself and ask a few stalls for price before you make any decision.
Cards are not accepted in those market, so bring cash with you. Allow one week for making. Of course, you can always ask for express service if you pay extra money.
Market open: 9am - 18pm
