Summer is always a hot season for various TV reality talent contests in China. Oriental Angel is one of them.
Basically Oriental Angel is a China’s Got Talent for girls only by Shanghai Media Group (SMG). Contestants not only have to bring their own special talent but also have to demonstrate some serious acting skills.
But Lou Jing, one of the five Shanghai finalists of Oriental Angel caused a controversial debate in Shanghai.

What is special about Lou Jing?
According to SMG, Lou Jing’s mother had an affair with an American African 20 years ago. The American Africanwent back to US and disappeared after she found herself pregnant. After she gave birth to Lou Jing, she divorced with her Chinese husband and raised Lou Jing by herself.

So Lou Jing is an illegitimate daughter of a black American but was born and grow up in Shanghai.
Most Chinese would find this hard to accept because this seriously challenges our traditional family value. Lots of Chinese thought the purpose of the show making Lou Jing one of the five Shanghai finalists is to attract more TV viewers and they strongly disagree that a main stream media (SMG) made use of a person’s story to promote its show. Especially the story involved marriage affair, illegitimate child such sensitive issues.
However, some argued the debate about Lou Jing may reflect some discrimination issues in China because they think if Lou Jing’s father is a white American, the public may find it easier to accept.
Things are getting even hotter after Lou Jing made public statements to respond to all the arguments.
Lou Jing’s Statements:
- my father is an American not African
- I am a Shanghainese
- My parents might have made mistake but I am innocent.
- I strongly disagree with the racial discrimination some people have about me.
Her statements made the situation even worse, especially the first sentence which emphasized her father is an American not an African made Lou Jing herself discrimination against African.
Last weekend, Lou Jing has been eliminated from the show but the debate is still going on.
