The Coolest Clothes Drying Rank in Shanghai

Drying clothes out of the windows in public might be one of the unique things made in Shanghai.  Because of the limited living space, Shanghainese has invented lots of clothes drying ranks to allow them to make the best use of the space out of the window on the wall.

Whenever there is a nice shining day,  bed sheets, quilt covers, clothes are everywhere in the air above your head especially in the old local residential blocks. The government has put a lot of efforts to educate people to give up this tradition because hanging clothes in public is considered as an uncivilised thing which should be abandoned.

But in recent days, an initiative by the local authority seemed to confuse the public.

The photo below showed a building near Yan’an Road near Yunnan Road.  Look at those clothes drying ranks outside every window, which now is called the coolest drying ranks in Shanghai by Chinese netizens.  Do they look like scaffold?

And I believe most of people will be stunned if you know the whole project cost 400,000RMB. And why? Because of the coming 2010 World Expo to create a prettier city image, local government decided to standardise the outdoor drying ranks.

But unfortunately, the residents in the building commented the drying ranks are extremely difficult to work with because the rank is too far to reach. Clothes were often dropped and they were worrying about the safety.
