Today I was discussing with Kitty what kind of shoes I should get for my yoga class. To be honest, I don’t want anything fancy or colourful. Just simple basic white canvas shoes.

‘So you mean like Huili or Feiyue shoes which we wore when we were little kids?’ Kitty asked.

‘Yes, yes, exactly’. I was so excited.

I believe if you ask every Chinese if he/she had a pair of Huili or Feiyue shoes when he/she was a little kid. Everybody would say YES.

I still remember in 1980s, when every Chinese didn’t know NIKE or ADIDAS, every Chinese wore Huili or Feiyue canvas shoes for sports, and most of them were simple white! I used to use white chalk to cover the stains!

But with those world brands coming into China, I now even don’t know where to find those shoes!

‘Hm…. I know a place!’ Kitty said.

Then we took the Metro Line 1 and got off at Hengshan Road Station, took the Exit 2, turned left, after a traffic light. We stopped at a very small shop (it is in Dongping Road).

Culture Matters! Mmmmm…. An interesting name!

The shop is really small. I saw this interesting picture at the entrance. The Chinese in the picture means: Shanghai Heart! Strong Chinese Brands!

What a patriotic slogan!

The shop itself is very small and simple. I was then amazed with all those canvas shoes.

I didn’t know that they now actually have so many different styles besides the simple white ones. Some are really trendy!

The shop  sell only two brands: Feiyue and Warrior (I didn’t know Warrior is the English name of Huili brand before).  And I was told both Feiyue and Huili (or Warrior) have existed for over 50 years, which we should be really proud of!

The price was so good. Most of them cost only about 40RMB. Then I was told Feiyue shoes in Europe would cost about 50Eur (about 75 USD) after a French company took over it and renovated the design and the brand.

As a Chinese, sometimes we feel very proud that many many products around the world are made in China. However, we also feel very sad that many of us always ask friends to buy those brands in other countries to save some money because those brands are domestic there but international for Chinese. Do we really not have something good made in China and also labeled as China?

So if next time a foreign friend wants to bring something back home from China, besides those fake designer brands, I will strongly recommend a pair of Feiyue or Huili Shoes!
