Fenshine Fashion & Accessorise Market (Taobao City)

Yesterday after I had this exhausting shopping in Qipu Road (a cheap cloth shopping street in Shanghai), I returned to West Nanjing Road at about 3pm. I went to the McDonald’s at the West Nanjing Road near Chengdu Road (the elevated road) to have a very late lunch.

I was surprised to find there were quite a few people there, and most of them were foreigners. Then I saw those big black garbage bags almost under every seat. The first guess I had was that like myself, they also just finished their shopping in Qipu Road. But later I found I was totally wrong. After I stepped out of McDonald’s, I saw this posh office building and a few foreigners were gathering at the entrance. Is this one more Xiangyang market or Xinyang market?

Actually I saw this building thousands of times whenever I was passing West Nanjing Road. But I never went into once. However, this time all these signs told me this is the place I could never miss again. It is called Fenshine Fashion & Accessories Market and also in Chinese called Taobao City (Metro direction here and open hours) which made me think it was related to Taobao.com, the largest online shopping mart in China.

The name of the market in Chinese is also called as kind of gift market. This reminded me what I just heard from a shop owner in Qipu Road. Whenever you saw gift market, it must be something about fake branded goods.

And he was absolutely right!

I just can’t believe there is this fake market right in the busiest and most expensive shopping street in Shanghai while we are talking about copyright all the time!

Fenshine is a 3 floor shopping mall full of fake branded clothes, shoes, jewelleries, electronic products etc. There are thousands of shops there and most of them sell very similar stuffs. So I guess like other fake markets in Shanghai, the basic principle of shopping here is comparison and don’t be shy to bargain.

All the shop owners speak fluent English and other languages. As I have been to A.P. Plaza at Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, I did a bit price comparison and found Fenshine is not bad.

But the owners usually have two pricing standards, Chinese and Foreigner. I overheard the conversation between a shop owner and a foreign customer and found the initial prices the owner told him were at least double than those they gave to me.

For example, a polo long sleeve shirt, they told me 130RMB but told him 300RMB. And I am pretty sure I can get the shirt at about 40RMB.

For a Canada Goose long down coat, the initial price the owner asked was 460RMB. And he reduced it to 200RMB by himself when he saw I was leaving.

Fenshine market actually is quite a good place for fake goods shopping, central and convenient. Metro Line 2, West Nanjing Road Station (map at here).

2. Bargaining price?  take a look how much paid. By the way, normally sales people are going through special price, friendly price, best price, or final price before you crave an actual deal. But what we want is just the cheapest possible price, right?  Anyway, bargain hard, they won’t die before Prada or whoever.

We will be spending a week in Vancouver before we take a week-long Alaskan cruise. Is there any place near downtown where we can take our clothes to get them washed, like a drop in laundry service? With two kids, the price per item that the hotel will charge will quickly add up to be more than we can afford.
