My Visit to Chengdu Kuan Zhai Xiang Zi(Wide and Narrow Alleys Chengdu)

Although Wide Alley should be wider than the Narrow Alley as the name indicated, personally I didn’t find much difference. They are both very narrow lanes full of restaurants, coffee shops etc.

The Narrow Alley is slightly narrower.

Shanghai Xintiandi completely tore down the old Shikumen houses, but Kuan Zhai Xiang Zi in Chengdu is more about restoring the old architecture in West China. The main structure is made from wood and bricks. I found this really old house which has not been refurbished in Kuan Xiang Zi.

Like Shanghai Xintiandi, Kuan Zhai Xiang Zi is a leisure center for people to relax having some quality time with friends in the mixed old and modern atmosphere. So inside those nicely restored old houses, there are restaurants, pubs, tea houses, coffee shops and stores etc.

And of course always there is Starbucks!

And Panda House which is an icon for Sichuan.

I found this interesting vintage and souvenir shop.

Full of colorful stuffs. It would be interesting to have this red door in the house. Look at Chairman Mao banner at the top says Wish Chairman Mao a long life forever.

I am not a fan of antiques especially those dated back thousands of years ago because I don’t really feel to be connected to those stuffs. But I found some interesting stuffs there. I believe everything on the shelf (the clock, radio, boxes) used to be every Chinese family’s essentials in 1980s when I was a little girl.

And the full collection of Chairman Mao badges which everybody must wear during China Cultural Revolution.

It is said that Chengdu people are really good at enjoying life. Even cleaning ear such a small thing, they know how to maximise the pleasure. The doctor look like man is a ear cleaning master who does not only help clean the ear but also know how to make the process most enjoyable. Anyway I didn’t have the gut to try. But the man in blue shirt surely enjoyed it. Look at the happy face!

Look at the menu before. I have to say it is not expensive especially compared with Shanghai Xintiandi. Set dinner 158RMB for 2-3 people. 38RMB for a Hairy Crab. Afternoon tea: 28RMB per person including green tea, almond, sunflower seeds and fruits.
