22 December, Dong Zhi (Winter solstice)

According the Chinese Lunar Calendar, 22 December this year is the winter solstice (in Chinese pronounced as Dong Zhi), which marks the start of the coldest time of the year.

I believe Chinese Lunar Calendar and recent weather forecast also proved it as Shanghai is going to minus 3 - 4 degrees this weekend!

And of course, there are some traditions associated with this special occasion.

Food:

Usually on the day of Winter Solstice, we should have dumplings:

or sweet rice dumplings,

or lamb

Winter Solstice is also about memorial. People usually visit families, friends graves on that day. So the report also said the traffic of this weekend (19-20 Dec) will be very busy in or out Shanghai.
