Eric, my California friend kept telling me how good Carl’s Jr at Raffles City was for two months. But I just didn’t feel like to go because:
- first of all, I am not a fan of burgers or sandwiches.
- second, The basement food floor at Raffles is a nightmare, always millions of people there, crowded, chaotic and noisy.
But today when I was passing Raffles City at 1pm, I found the restaurant was even less busy than KFC upstairs. Since I didn’t have my lunch yet, I decided to give it a try.

Carl's Jr in Shanghai
It seemed that Carl’s Jr was more favored by foreigners because 80% customers inside were clearly Lao Wai!
The menu was basically like the KFC of McDonald’s, beef, chicken, fries and drink.
The price mmmmmm……. was much higher than KFC or McDonald’s. Average meal price was about 30 - 35RMB.

I ordered the Famous Star meal which includes a beef burger, a small fry and a small drink (refillable).
The staff delivered the food to my table 1 minute after I ordered. That was fast!

The burger was much bigger than McDonald’s or Burger King here in Shanghai.

The taste…..mmmmm I have to say very average, really nothing special. I wondered why Eric was so crazy about it?! I even think it was a bit overcooked because it was dry, hard, not juicy at all. The only good point was Carl’ Jr put more lettuce than McDonald’s or Burger King.

Okay, the burger was a let down. The fries was actually good. It was chunkier, crispier than KFC or McDonald’s.

Another good point was the refill station. There were quite a few choices there including Diet Coke and hot tea and coffee! But one question is if the drink is refillable, why bother to sell them in different sizes, small, medium or large?

Okay, I have to say my first ever experience with Carl’s Jr was mmmm…. very average. And to be honest, the portion was too big for me, I am still feeling very full at 4:30pm in the afternoon while I am writing this. I think KFC and McDonald’s in China definitely make their sandwiches smaller than in Europe or US. They do that for reasons.

In answer to your question “if the drink is refillable, why bother to sell them in different sizes, small, medium or large?”…the answer is take-out! They can make more money when the order is for take-out since the customer is likely to order a larger size drink to take since there can be no refills.
Thanks for the answer. I thought about take-away before, but obviously I am not business man material.
