I’ve heard the pubs in Tongren Road were closing down a couple of weeks ago. I thought that was few cases or temporary closure due to the Christmas holiday or something else. But from today’s news, the pubs in Tongren Road are closed because they don’t fit government new city planning. According to the new planning, the pubs will be replaced by some high end restaurants to fit with the ‘high end and elegant’ West Nanjing Road CBD area.

Tongren Road (map here) is this short street crossing West Nanjing Road and between West Beijing Road and Yan’an Road.
Although it is the newly bar street in Shanghai, it is as famous as Hengshan Road now because of its great location, right next to the West Nanjing Road CBD, surrounded by A-list office buildings and hotels. (Shanghai Top 3 bar streets: Hengshan Road, Tongren Road and Xin Tian Di)
I have been to the bars in Tongren Road before and there were a few nice bars there such as Malone’s, Blue Frog, Renaissance 1929 etc. Most customers actually were foreigners. However I also saw lots of ladies who were doing ‘extra jobs’ there. So I think that could be one of the main reasons why the government decided to close the pubs in Tongren Road especially before the 2010 World EXPO.
Below are some photos I took before at Tongren Road.
