Going to Shanghai from Hangzhou airport, you may have several options. Which one is better to you, it all depends on case by case.

First, taking a taxi to Shanghai from Hangzhou is not practical. It will cost you big $$$ to hire one unless you rent one in fixed rate. More detail about price and distance etc., check here.

Second, there has bus service from Hangzhou xiaoshan airport going to Shanghai directly. The bus is called Air Asia Shuttle Bus. The cost will be rmb100, and estimated journey time is two and half hours. The bus will stop at Shanghai Huangpu Bus Station where is just under Nanpu Bridge and has a direct pass to Metro Line 4.  For bus schedule and stop location etc., please click here.

BTW, there is one more alternative: take airport shuttle bus to Hangzhou railway station (route map here), and buy CRH high speed train ticket to Shanghai South Railway Station. It will cost no more than RMB100 totally, so just for your information in case you miss or don’t want to wait longer time for Air Asia shuttle bus to Shanghai.

However, if you miss your trip to Shanghai, here is budget hotel finder in Hangzhou for rating, price, location, and more.

    Hi,

Thanks for the information. I understand from friend buying CRH train ticket will be a long queue. Do you know where can i buy the ticket online ?

    Thanks in advance

  2. Hoo says:

    Hi Jo,

Yeah, a long queue will be dependent on which season or day or where you travel. You have several ways to buy CRH train ticket:

    1. Going to railway station to buy CRH train ticket from ticket machine.

    2. Going to windows which staff speak English. Don’t expect all station having staff speaking English.

    3. Buy your ticket at ticket booth located around the city. I guess it will be a shorter queue.

If you want to buy ticket online, I only know one in Chinese: http://www.99pto.com/browse.php. Actually, in China, we don’t have universal online train booking system by China Railways.

From airasia bus schedule to shanghai, there is no service on Sunday. Do you know any options going to Shanghai on Sunday as it is late night already? Any advice appreciated and thanks in advance!

  4. andersen says:

Hi, i am arriving shanghai very late by bus, about 1 am, does metro still run at that time? thanks.

  5. chris says:

I am going to visit expo park in the coming August, do you know journey time from HZ airport to SH by bus?

  6. Hoo says:

@Chris Journey time will be more than 2 hours under normal traffic. However, always be prepared on some unexpected traffic on the highway, specially weekend or holiday seasons.

Maybe taking bus to Shanghai from Hangzhou airport is always no-brainer choice, but journey time is really up to traffic on the highway.

  7. Hoo says:

@andersen Sorry, metro is close at the time you arrive in Shanghai. Maybe taxi is only your choice to place you will go. Do check shanghai taxi fare lookup table for your information, and taxi has a fee charged during night operation.

hi, i am going to shanghai via hangzhou, and flight will arive in xiaoshan airport at 10:20pm, then plan direct to shanghai by air asia bus. do you know how I can book bus ticket in advance? thank you very much.

  9. Chang W. Lee says:

Hi, i am flying to HZ in the coming month, and i would like to take train to Shanghai after landing. do you have any train schedule from HZ airport to SH? Thank you.

  10. Hoo says:

@vincent i am not sure you could book bus ticket advance or not. because bus is from air asia, I suggest you check with them. however, if bus is really packed with passengers, i think you still have alternative rush to shanghai, either taking bullet trains or T or K trains. Obviously, taking air asia bus t o shanghai is easier than other alternatives.

  11. Hoo says:

@Chang sorry, we don’t have trains direct from hangzhou airport to shanghai. If you need to catch trains, you need go to either Hangzhou railway station (map here) or South hangzhou railway station first (map here). From there, you buy your ticket to shanghai. Train schedules to shanghai are listed in the page, you could take for your reference.

    Hi Mr Hoo

Is the Airasia shuttle bus service only available to Airasia passengers? I’m arriving on the 2nd of aug and i heard it’s hard to get most transport (except taxi, which is too expensive) to SH due to the Expo. I don;t know anyone who can pre-book and pickup any tickets for me in advance (say, a day before my arrival). Airasia shuttle seems like my only option now, is there a chance i may not be able to buy the shuttle bus ticket upon arrival? they don’t pre-sell the shuttle ticket in advance.

    Thanks!!

  15. Hoo says:

@Alfred Airasia passengers have priority to take shuttle bus, so it all depends. And i was told bullet D train tickets are a little hard to get now as summer vacation, advanced booking is safe. But i guess K or T trains should be OK (maybe standing ticket). I am not sure when you arrive Xiaoshan airport, if time and luggage OK, you may take a taxi or shuttle bus to downtown Hangzhou, then from there take a coach bus to Shanghai. There are many buses going to Shanghai daily.

You are right, no taxi from HZ to SH, it will charge a lot and not a worth.

BTW, bullet train tickets could be bought in 10 or 20 day in advance.

Good luck! hope you have an wonderful journey to Shanghai!

  16. alfred says:

Thanks Mr Hoo for your swift reply. I will arrive at 1.15pm, airasia shuttle is my first priority, else I guess I will have to take a cab to downtown (no idea where) to catch any buses. I must reach SH by the evening..finger crossed.

I don’t have anyone to pick up the D train ticket for me even if I pre-book.

    Thanks again.

    Rgds

  17. Hoo says:

    @Alfred. You are welcome.

Yeah, train ticket is always headache to most visitors to China or even locals because China raliways don’t have eletronic ticket, and you have to get your paper ticket in hand.

BTW, if you come to Hangzhou about 1.15pm in the noon, my suggestion is to try Airasia bus first. If not OK, you could take airport shuttle bus to Hangzhou main train station to see any good luck to get train tickets. Station should have bulletin board to tell any availablity for ticket of any trains.

If no any train tickets available in the day you travel, and if you don’t mind tell me where you stay at Shanghai (just location OK), then i could try to help tell which coach bus station you should go to board bus.

Don’t worry much, i guess you could reach SH by the evening if your flight arrive at HZ on time.

Any questions, feel free ask me.

P.S. you said you could pre-book your ticket, so why don’t pick up your train ticket at one of booking offices by your own? maybe i got confused here. If i station at HZ, i wish i could help you make your travel easier.

  18. Alfred says:

    Hi Mr Hoo

Okay roger. will do as per your suggestion. i am staying at 海潮路 (haichao lu) in SH, so in HZ which bus station shall i go? just in case i miss the airasia shuttle and unable to buy a train ticket.

    Thanks man!

    Rgds

  19. Hoo says:

@Alfred If taking coach bus, it’s better going to Central Hangzhou Coach Bus Station (a.k.a. Jiubao Coach Bus Station). Chinese name is 杭州客运中心站 (a.k.a. 九堡客运中心).

From Hangzhou main train station, there have city buses going to here. Bus No. is K508 if i am not wrong in memory. If you taking taxi, distance is about 15km to main train station. About estimated taxi fare, you could check this table here.

When arriving at Bus Station (九堡客运中心), then taking bus to South Shanghai Coach Bus Station. Bus ticket price is 65RMB, and hours are 15:39, 16:21, 16:35, 16:49, 17:03 and more until the last bus at 18:43.

When arriving at South Shanghai Coach Bus Station, you just transit metro line 3, then line 4 to your place. If i am not wrong, your place is near to Nanpu bridge.

    Good luck.

  20. Alfred says:

thank you Hoo. You are the best, really appreciate
