Data released by local city government in June show the average monthly apartment rent in Beijing is 2947 yuan (about US$440), and apartment is just a smaller two bedrooms with furniture (about 60 square meter or 646 square feet in size). If location is near to city center or metro station, then rent will go higher, otherwise lower to 1931 yuan where is an outskirt city of Beijing, such as Tongzhou district.
Expensive, huh? Let me share more data then we could judge.
2009 average monthly salary in Beijing is: 3726 yuan.
2009 average salary of fresh graduate in Bejing: 2472 yuan.
Obviously, you have your own judgement now. How about Shanghai? I guess it isn’t better than Beijing.
BTW, if you try to look for rent around 2000RMB per month, you still could find apartments in Beijing. Rent is really related to years of apartment, size in apartment, location, and furniture (luxury or simple) etc.. If you like to share with roommates, you may find monthly rent below 1000RMB.
