Shanghai minimum pay guideline

Starting from April 1st., 2010, minimum monthly pay by employers in Shanghai can’t be lower than RMB1120 ($167), and minimum hourly pay, which was RMB8 before, is RMB9 now.

Obviously, this salary is just for your food and shelter you can’t imagine. Why? Let me do math here.

Monthly food expense:
Breakfast RMB5 (local average)
Lunch RMB10 (below local average)
Dinner RMB10 (below local average)
Total is RMB25 daily, and then monthly food expense will be RMB750 (RMB25 X 30 days)

Then left income is RMB370 (RMB1120 - RMB750). Imagine here, with RMB370 per month, what kind of shelter you could rent in Shanghai?

Actually, when local employers such as restaurants try to hire people, they actually need to cover food and shelter expense. Otherwise it is hard to find people to hire. For example, yesterday I saw a hiring A.D. in Shanghai one or Shanghai bay where is located near to Pudong Nextage shopping center, and try to find waiters with starting RMB1500 salary and food & shelter provided.

So what is the average salary in Shanghai? check data here from local government in 2010.
