Shanghai public transportation card could be used on many city transportations, such as metro, city bus, ferry, and taxi etc. And it also could be used in other neighboring cities around Shanghai too.

Definitely by using a public transportation card, you will get some benefits:
1. 10% off discount if you spend more than 70RMB on Metro within a month.
2. Transit between bus and metro within 90 minutes, card holder could get 1RMB discount.
3. No need to bring cash with you.
4. No need to queue in the long line to buy your metro ticket at packed stations, such as People’s Square, Lujiazui, and Xujiahui etc..

However, because public transportation card has a 20RMB deposit inside, refund may not be convenient to short-time visitors in Shanghai.

So public transportation card is good to visitors using public transportation a lot and staying in Shanghai at least for a while, such as 3 months or longer. However, card authority has no any regulation about how long visitors stay in Shanghai to qualify to buy card.

To short time visitors, Shanghai metro day pass may be an good alternative though it may not be used on other public transportation.
