KDS Guy and Liba Girl

Monday, November 30th, 2009

If you live Shanghai long enough (and  you are  able to read Chinese), you must know what KDS and Liba mean!

Both KDS and Liba are two well known BBS online forums in Shanghai.

KDS stands for Kuan Dai Shan which in Chinese means Broadband Mountain. And Liba in Chinese means fence or hedge. Because most users of these two forums are Shanghainese, both KDS and Liba are labeled as Shanghai local forums. Read More…

Kenny G, never out of date in China

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

Today when I was passing a middle school in Pudong, I heard the famous saxophone Going Home by Kenny G. Aha, it was not a music class. The music does what the name said, telling all the children it was the time to go home!

And then when I was shopping in the Lianhua Supermarket, after the ‘That’s the end of our service today’ announced by the sweet lady, Kenny G’s famous Going Home was with us again! Read More…

Meng (萌), a new Chinese word I learned today

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Today when I was having dinner with two of my friends, suddenly one of them said: ‘check it out, that girl, 6 o’clock, is very Meng’. And the other said: ‘ Wow, she is Meng!’

Okay, both of them were talking in Chinese and I know every word they said. But I couldn’t understand it!

Then I asked:’What? What is Meng?’ Read More…

Shanghai is colder than Helongjiang, really?

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

The weather of 2009 in Shanghai is extremely unusual!

We had the coolest yet wettest summer after the solar eclipse. And then we had the shortest and warmest autumn, always above 20 degrees. Now we are having the earliest cold winter right in town.

It was still 20 degrees last Monday and now we got only 5-6 degrees. We skipped the whole 10s! This is dramatic! Read More…

The Coolest Clothes Drying Rank in Shanghai

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

Drying clothes out of the windows in public might be one of the unique things made in Shanghai.  Because of the limited living space, Shanghainese has invented lots of clothes drying ranks to allow them to make the best use of the space out of the window on the wall.

Whenever there is a nice shining day,  bed sheets, quilt covers, clothes are everywhere in the air above your head especially in the old local residential blocks. The government has put a lot of efforts to educate people to give up this tradition because hanging clothes in public is considered as an uncivilised thing which should be abandoned. Read More…

My stroll in Hongkou District Shanghai (Duolun Road)

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

Duolun Road is labeled as the cultural road in Hongkou. This was my first time in Duolun Road. My stroll in Hongkou District Shanghai (Lu Xun Park)

Friday, October 9th, 2009

Lu Xun Park is located right beside the Hongkou Football Stadium at North Sichuan Road. Although the park is named after the famous Chinese writer Lu Xun,Lu Xun Park might be the most vividly living park in Shanghai. Not for tourists, totally serves the local communities needs. It also reminded me of the parks back in 1980s where my parents usually took me to for holidays. Read More…

My stroll in Hongkou District Shanghai (Hongkou Football Stadium)

Friday, October 9th, 2009

The weather during 2009 National Day Golden week in Shanghai is what we call Best Season in Shanghai except 1st Oct. It was dry, clear, breezy and sunny. What a waste if I didn’t go out! So I decided to go around Hongkou District.

In local Shanghainese mind, Hongkou district is regarded as an unpleasant or lower end district like Zhabei District (Jingan District, Luwan District and Xuhui District are usually regarded good districts in Shanghai). But these two districts are actually very close to the city centre and the river. Why they are less developed? Okay, I haven’t found the answer yet. Read More…

Because he got unbelievable 8 wedding invitations from his friends, relatives etc for this golden week. Jason told me, if he goes to every wedding, at least he has to give 500RMB for each wedding couple. So 8 weddings, 4000RMB! Read More…

Love Shanghai Wet Market

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

I know  there is always this or that problem you may have with the wet market. But I just love it more and more.

Unlike supermarket, everything is standard, the wet market makes me feel so personal. Every owner of the stand has their own personalities although they sell very similar stuffs. Some are more quiet while some are more talkative. If you shop in wet market frequently, you can easily establish relations with some of your favourite owners which makes the shopping experiences more pleasant. Guess what, I even got to know the fruit stand owner’s two sons  today! It is also very easy to tell what kind of things are in season. Just look around, they are usually piled on every stand! Delivery/Parcel rejected or delayed due to Security Check before National Day

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Today I went to a post office to EMS a parcel to my friend in Beijing. The post office staff asked me to open the box for security check. After they found bottles of capsules, they rejected it because capsules are not allowed.

So I tried to contact another private courier company (because as the state owned post office, EMS might not be that flexible) but again failed. Then I asked them why because I did send the capsules a couple of months ago.  The staff told me that they received a special notice from national authority required stricter security check before accept the parcel.
