A chaotic night in Shanghai street caused by blackout Monday, August 24th, 2009

Last night, when I was passing Yuanshen Stadium in Pudong, I saw lots of people (most were in their pajamas) were in the middle of Weifang Road to block the street. It seemed that they were protesting against something.

I was told the whole neighbourhood was blacked out in this hot and sticky summer night from 7:15pm. One hour after they reported to Shanghai electricity company, still nobody showed up to help. People were really annoyed and then decided to protest in the street. I saw about 10 police were around to divert the cars and closely monitor the crowd. Specialised food shop

There are some food shops in those international communities in Shanghai, such as Gubei, Green City, Hongqiao etc. Those shops usually have very strong country identity depends on the countries/regions the owner from.  The shop owners are usually people from other countries who currently live in Shanghai. Some of them opened the food shop because they found it was difficult to get their home town food in Shanghai when they first came to Shanghai. Rent a flat or apartment in Shanghai How Saturday, May 9th, 2009

For the new comer in Shanghai, the first thing is to rent a flat or apartment (good to have a shelter!) I have lived in Shanghai for five years and rented two flats so far till I bought my own flat last year. Some useful suggestions drawn on my past experiences:

- If you are completely new in Shanghai, it would be very helpful if one of your friends in Shanghai can provide you short-term accommodation at their home. This allows you a bit time to find a suitable flat and settle some other personal issues because it does take a bit time to find a good one. Or if you couldn’t find such one friend, good to find an affordable hotel for transitional stay. I stayed in one of my friends’ home for half month before I moved out. Read More…
