If you would like to have some made-to-order formal suits, dresses etc, South Maoming Road would be a place you want to visit in Shanghai.
Since a lot of readers asking me about those tailor shops in South Maoming Road, I went to South Maoming road to have a closer look at those shops. And anyway, I think South Maoming Road itself is a nice road I love to walk by.
Yes, tailor shops one by one in South Maoming Road, you have loads of choices there. And from the samples they displayed in stores, I can tell the quality was fairly good. All the shops there provide English services. Read More…

If you need to take the Metro everyday in the morning rush hour (7:30am - 9:00am) in Shanghai, you may find some old people are always there either near the escalators or exits to collect the used newspapers (mainly Metro which is the free newspaper distributed in Shanghai Metro).
At Lujiazui Station (Metro Line 2) where I usually get off, I saw more and more old people joining this group in the past year. Those old people collect the used paper and then sell it to the recycle company to make some money. Read More…

Today, when I came to the office around 10:15am, many people asked me if I was delayed by the Metro Line 2 accident. I had no idea because the train I took from Century Avenue Station was very normal. Then my colleagues told me it seemed that there was an accident somewhere in Line 2 and caused about 30 minutes delay.
Then the afternoon news reported that a person was killed at Century Avenue Station Metro Line 2 around 9:43am this morning because he/she jumped off the platform in front of an oncoming train. The news said the the gender and identity couldn’t be confirmed at this moment.
The reason why he/she jumped off the platform is unknown. Read More…

Today Metro Line 2 got stuck in rush hour, and incredible crowd stopped at most stations of Line 2. The incident is a serious stuck of Line 2 that didn’t happen for a long, long time.
It seems staff at Metro didn’t handle well at emergency. Metro broadcasted again and again to persuade passengers to switch to other transportation tools rather than stick to Metro. But a large portion of passengers still tried to wait Metro been restored even they don’t know when. Read More…

I took this photo in other day when I walked on Century Avenue in Pudong, Shanghai. This is a road sign to Shanghai Metro. As a local resident, I could understand easily what it means. A new comer will always be confused by the taxi driver’s question when he or she arrives at the destination and ready to pay: how would you like to pay for the meter: Cash or Card? No, no, no… they are not asking your credit card or debit card. What they are asking is the Public Transportation Card which can be used in any public transportation (Metro, Bus, Taxi etc) in Shanghai .
Basically the Shanghai Public Transportation Card is stored value card where you deposit certain amount of money. It is like a kind of e-wallet. The fee you need pay for any public transportation service will be taken out from the card when you use it. Read More…

Purchase:
The easiest way to buy your first card is from the ticket office of any Metro Station in Shanghai . There are also 1900 selling points throughout Shanghai where you can buy the card, but it might be a bit difficult for a new comer to tell which is authorised and which is fake.
For the first purchase, there are three face values you can choose: 100RMB, 200RMB and 500RMB, in which 20/30RMB deposit is included. For example, you give 100RMB and then get a face value of 100RMB card. You actually have 70RMB to spend and the 20RMB will be stored in the card as a deposit. Read More…

Metro might be the fastest way to get around Shanghai especially when the taxi or bus is stuck in the traffic and takes forever to get to the place you want to go during the rush hour;. The metro can be very crowded during the rush hours (7:30am – 9:30am and 4:30pm – 6:30pm). Everybody is squeezed like a sardine in a can.
Shanghai introduced its first Metro Line (Metro Line 1) in 1995 by collaborating with German. Till now, there are 8 lines in operation (Line 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9) and 7 more by the end of 2010. Each Metro line is simply named by numbers. Read More…
